Due to the increasing demand for green energy sources in recent years, the market has shown a strong interest in new energy solutions, with solar photovoltaic power generation being one of the prominent representatives. However, selecting a suitable motor for solar photovoltaic trackers is not an easy task, primarily due to the need for long-term exposure to harsh environmental conditions, with motor safety and protection being paramount considerations. The motor design for solar applications must be capable of withstanding extreme temperatures, humidity, high levels of corrosive salt spray, wind loads, and abrasive airborne particles. Since the motor is exposed to harsh environments, it should be designed to meet IP65 (dust and water-resistant) or IP67 (dust and immersion in water at depths between 15 cm to 1 meter) standards.
These motors are mostly driven by a 24V voltage source, with low speeds ranging from 5 to 10 rpm and torque levels around 100-300 N·m.
Both the motor and the gears attached to it must be optimized for low-speed and high-torque solar tracking. Considerations for gear transmission include engineering lubrication, low-friction gear design, special sealed ball bearing designs, and appropriate treatments for the output shaft and housing. As a supplementary safety feature, gear motors include an electromagnetic brake that absorbs the impact of wind on the moving components of the tracker, preventing damage and extending the lifespan of the machine and its primary components.
Permanent Magnet DC Motors (PMDC) are relatively efficient, easy to control, and offer significant cost advantages. However, if there are strict longevity requirements, the use of brushless motors with planetary gearboxes can also be considered, greatly increasing the lifespan.
